ONC Team USA Hockey

Kevin R. Murray, MD recently returned from Germany where he served as the physician for Team USA Hockey at the Deutschland Cup.   When asked about his latest trip with Team USA, he described it as “A fantastic experience”.   Dr. Murray has been caring for USA Hockey since 2007.  His position as team doctor has taken him to a variety of hockey venues; including, Russia, Canada, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Sweden, as well as hockey hotbeds in the USA.

As a team physician, Dr. Murray coordinates and delivers medical care for players, staff, family members, and anyone traveling with the team.  He must be available 24/7. In addition to injuries sustained on the ice, Dr. Murray also utilizes his expertise to treat non-orthopedic conditions ranging from colds and flu to more serious illness.  Dr. Murray feels very fortunate to be a part of the top notch USA medical staff.  In addition, he has formed valued friendships with the physicians and staff from competing nations.  “Together, we have been able to tackle anything that has occurred.”  It is precisely these relationships, the people, along with great hockey, that Dr. Murray has found to be the most rewarding aspects of his experience.

Along with many other kids in Minnesota, Dr. Murray grew up playing ice hockey.  “Although we changed sports with the season, hockey was our passion.”  He has played hockey throughout his life: high school, college at Yale, Junior Olympic, and continues to play competitive hockey at Sharks Ice.  This love of sports and caring for athletes of all ages led Dr. Murray to a career in orthopedic surgery.  In addition, he has a subspecialty certification in sports medicine.  For Dr. Murray, “it was a natural fit to become involved with USA Hockey.”  Dr. Murray also has served as covering physician for a wide range of athletic teams and events; including, USA Track & Field, and US Open Golf.

Dr. Murray can be found in both the Campbell and Los Gatos OrthoNorCal offices, “helping people maintain vitality and participation in sports and recreation” (Murray).  He strongly believes in remaining active throughout life, both for himself and his patients, and sets this as the goal when caring for patients.
