For the aspiring surgeons and physicians, or patients who would like to broaden their knowledge in orthopedics, we recommend comprehensive reads and educational video programs, authored by our very own OrthoNorCal doctors.

Dr. Nicholas Abidi authored two chapters for the Atlas of Essential Orthopaedic Procedures.

About the book:

Written by members of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, there are over 100 common, current and important surgical techniques.

There are 720 pages and 107 chapters, each usually describing a single operative procedure or technique, such as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, 1st carpometacarpal joint arthroplasty or hallux valgus surgery. Three adult and one paediatric ACL reconstruction techniques are included.

Each chapter usually has: a brief introduction of the pathology; assessment of the patient; operation setup; patient positioning; surgical approach; and fixation/reconstruction technique. Most chapters are very comprehensive in terms of the preoperative assessment, surgical tips and tricks, and how to deal with difficult cases. In particular, the sections on shoulder, knee and trauma are most impressive.

This book excels in its presentation. There are excellent and high quality figures of operative fields, relevant basic anatomy or radiographs depicting important surgical steps.

In addition, a corresponding video demonstration of each chapter can be found on the attached CD, which covers 70 procedures.

It is a comprehensive atlas of current operative techniques for the general orthopaedic surgeon, and is useful for surgeons of any level.

Among the other orthopedic video programs, Dr. Nicholas Abidi authored “Hip: Anterior Hip Arthroplasty Approach Utilizing Operative Fracture Table and Fluoroscopy.”

This program outlines patient positioning and the surgical technique used in the anterior supine intermuscular (ASI) surgical approach to primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). The video focuses on setting up the patient and positioning him/her on the fracture table. It also demonstrates the use of fluoroscopy for component postioning and illustrates how the design of the fracture table can assist in accurate placement during ASI primary THA.
